“In madness lies change, in change is opportunity, and in opportunity are riches.”

This is the third novel of the Saxon Chronicles, taking place during the time of King Alfred the Great. In this novel, King Alfred is back on the throne in Wessex but has a tenuous grip. The Saxons and Danes still battle for control of Great Britain, with native Britons pushed back to the west, Scots on the north, Northmen/Danes occupying parts of Ireland, and conflicts between Christians and Pagans.

The development of Uhtred and other characters continues as the author weaves the story of the Saxons & Danes. There is plenty of action in this book and a lot of thought about life, gods, and men. It is interesting to see how people can love, lie, and forgive in this book. Also, the confusion of religion and how people related to early Christianity, both believers and non-believers, is an interesting philosophical story that is woven into the story of Uhtred.

This is another excellent book in the Saxon series, which continues the story of Uhtred. The author does an excellent job of creating a historical fiction story that has the elements of history mixed in with fiction to make it an interesting read. If you enjoy medieval history and like fiction, then you’ll want to read this book, which will keep you turning the pages until the very end.
