Synopsis
Eleanor of Aquitaine is a 12th century icon who has fascinated readers for 800 years. But the real Eleanor remains elusive.
This stunning novel introduces an Eleanor that all other writers have missed. Based on the most up-to-date research, it is the first novel to show Eleanor beginning her married life at 13.
Overflowing with scandal, passion, triumph and tragedy, Eleanor's legendary story begins when her beloved father dies in the summer of 1137, and she is made to marry the young prince Louis of France. A week after the marriage she becomes a queen and her life will change beyond recognition.
My Review
''All that remained were poignant memories, and she must face reality, not live on dreams.''
What I like about this book is that nearly entire book was devoted to her first marriage to Louis VII, King of France. So often this fact is quickly dismissed over in favor of second marriage to Henry II of England. Eleanor was married to Louis for fifteen years, they marriage had ups and downs, they had two daughters. So it was nice to read a book that covers that part of her life.
I also love Chadwick's portrayal of Eleanor (Alienor in the novel) for not using popular theories, but actually doing her own research. She isn't a tramp, as so many historians and historical fiction books like to make her out to be. She is so much more, intelligent, politically astute, strong and determined woman.
