Synopsis:
Young Josephine Bonaparte shines at the center of a new, sweeping, romantic work of historical fiction by Sandra Gulland: detailed and exhaustively researched, compelling and powerful,The Many Lives and Secret Sorrows of Josephine B. is the first in a trilogy of fictional novels tracing the actual rise of a young European noblewoman who would one day stand next to Napoleon. From the heartbreak of lost loves to the horror of revolution to the hope of new days, it's an intimate epic any romance lover will love.My Review:
He calls me Josephine. He says I'm an angel, a saint, his good lucky star. I know I'm no angel, but in truth I have begun to like this Josephine he sees. She is intelligent; she amuses; she is pleasing. She is grace and charm and heart. Unlike Rose; scared, haunted and needy. Unlike Rose with her sad life.
This book is excellent in drawing the reader back to the time of pre-revolutionary France and the French Revolution. Through the use of the first person diary format, the reader gets to be there, living like an aristocrat before the revolution and living through the fear of the horror in the guillotine’s shadow.
Viewing the world through Rose’s (Josephine’s) innocent and young eyes gradually evolve as she is required to grow up via loss of a sister, parenthood, loss of her first love and marriage, loss of family and place, and deal with the political mood of Paris. It’s a tale of a woman trapped in a loveless marriage, in hopeless situations and how she achieved through her own strength of character to rise above her misfortunes.
Bonaparte comes out only at the end of this book. Ambitious and intense, he concentrates on Rose as part of his destiny while she again resigned to deal with what sorrow life presents to her.
The Many Lives & Secret Sorrows of Josephine B. is never tiring, always compelling, a definite page-turner.
