A Knight in Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux
Synopsis:
Once upon a time... as a fair maiden lay weeping upon a cold tombstone, her heartfelt desire was suddenly made real before her: tall, broad of shoulder, attired in gleaming silver and gold, her knight in shining armor had come to rescue his damsel in distress...
Abandoned by a cruel fate, lovely Dougless Montgomery lies weeping upon a cold tombstone in an English church. Suddenly, the most extraordinary man appears. It is Nicholas Stafford, Earl of Thornwyck…and according to his tombstone he died in 1564!
Drawn to his side by a bond so sudden and compelling it overshadows reason, Dougless knows that Nicholas is nothing less than a miracle: a man who does not seek to change her, who finds her perfect, fascinating, just as she is. What Dougless never imagined was how strong the chains are that tie them to the past…or the grand adventure that lay before them.
My Review:
“Modern women had their own self-made guilt to make them miserable, but the sixteenth-century people had diseases, their fear of the unknown, their ignorance of medicine, and constant and ever-present death to haunt them.”
Douglass Montgomery is in an abusive relationship where she is taken for granted and she has low self-esteem. When she is left behind by her boyfriend in an old English church with no money and no passport, her cries are heard by Nicholas Stafford, a dashingly handsome earl, while he is awaiting his execution for a crime he did not do. When Nicholas first appears beside Douglass, she doesn’t believe that he is from the 16th century. Even so, Douglass has a big heart and takes it upon herself to help Nicholas as he looks lost in the 20th century. As they take on an adventure to discover who conspired against Nicholas to cause him to become falsely accused of treason, they fall in love and Douglass learns the true meaning of relationships.
The characters are portrayed so well; they don’t seem like fictional characters. It is like watching real people go through real emotions. That made the story even more believable.
At first, Douglass seems to be a clingy-needy type who feels helpless in her circumstances. Her strength and bravery unfold throughout the story and her emotions seem so real they are palpable.
The Hero, Nicholas, too good to be true, but yet so real, gallant, honorable... Some of the best parts of the book describe how he becomes accustomed to the 20th century. He also questions some of our modern-day customs, “liberations”, and morals, which in his eyes do not seem wise.
The research required to set up a realistic time travel experience for both characters was amazing. Both acted in a believable fashion to their new surroundings. Ms. Deveraux added so many details about the differences between Elizabethan and Modern society. It is interesting to see the 20th century through the eyes of someone from the 15th century. Likewise, it is very interesting to see the 15th-century lifestyle. Ms. Deveraux has done a magnificent job of portraying both the periods. She has brought the period alive through her description.
The other great thing in this book was that this love story was so genuine and advanced at a great pace. They had an attraction, but they didn’t act on anything right away. Their love builds and grows. It has rough patches and disappointments. We see them fall in love and I love when authors take their time with that. The ending is a surprise, but a great way to bring this unique story to closure.
This book is filled with adventure, heartbreak, love, loyalty, time-travel, humor, and intelligence. It is an absolutely remarkable story from one of the best storytellers of our time. It has captivated my interest right from the beginning. There are many twists and turns throughout the story that will keep you entertained.
