I loved this book! The thrilling adventure unfolds against a backdrop of strained British diplomatic relations with China, reaching a perilous low. The Chinese are furious over the botched handling of a precious dragon egg, originally meant for Napoleon. As the egg hatches into a magnificent creature, Temeraire, the dragon, forms an unbreakable bond with his human companion, Will Laurence, refusing to be separated from him. Amid this tension, a decision is made: they will embark on a grand ocean journey to China, setting the stage for an exciting new chapter in their saga.

The crew embarks on an epic journey that takes them East across the vast and unpredictable ocean for more than six months. Along the way, they face a fierce sea battle against the French, their ships clashing amidst crashing waves and the roar of cannons. They also brave a tumultuous storm that tosses their vessel like a toy, with howling winds and rain lashing down, testing their courage and seamanship. Adding to their harrowing experiences, they encounter a monstrous sea serpent, its sinuous body rising from the depths in a terrifying display of power.

Amidst these thrilling escapades, the crew finds moments of respite, sharing elaborate descriptions of the meals they savor, whether they’re on the turbulent seas or enjoying a well-deserved feast in vibrant China. From hearty stews and freshly caught fish to exotic dishes featuring spices and flavors they’ve never encountered before, each meal tells a story of camaraderie and endurance as they navigate their extraordinary journey.

To Laurence's astonishment, China unfolds as a remarkable realm of civilization and enlightenment. In this vibrant land, dragons and humans share a harmonious existence, cohabiting in a tapestry of culture and tradition. Temeraire, his beloved dragon, is cherished as a member of the Imperial Family, an honor that befits his noble lineage.

However, the atmosphere in the court is fraught with tension. The cunning Chinese officials seek to exploit the bond between Laurence and Temeraire. They attempt to woo the intellectually inclined Temeraire with exquisite poetry and enticing invitations to reconnect with his long-lost dragonkin. At the same time, they cast a shadow over Laurence's safety by issuing threats of assassination, casting a dark cloud over his every move.

As the layers of royal intrigue begin to unfurl, it becomes clear that Temeraire's dual status as the twin brother of a significant dragon has introduced a precarious instability into the already volatile line of succession for the human throne. This revelation sets the stage for a web of political machinations that could alter the fate of both dragons and humans alike.

In the end, everything falls into place, and a much-anticipated return to England is in the works for Temeraire and his devoted handler, Laurence. One might question why Temeraire would choose to leave such a magnificent place, filled with endless opportunities for learning and growth. The answer, however, lies in his deep longing for his friends back in England. While he delights in the rich experiences and knowledge he gains, a part of him yearns for the exhilarating rush of battle and camaraderie amongst his fellow dragons.

With a heart full of ambition, Temeraire is determined to return to England, driven by a desire to reform the way dragons are treated there. His vision is idealistic, filled with hopes of creating a better world for his kind, but he remains blissfully unaware of the myriad challenges that lie ahead. Laurence, ever the pragmatic one, knows that this task will be far from easy and fraught with obstacles.

Yet, with Temeraire’s vibrant spirit and adventurous nature, life is certain to be anything but dull. Their journey promises excitement, challenges, and the unwavering bond of friendship that makes every moment worthwhile.

I adored this book, as it unfolds like a richly woven fairy tale filled with complexity and depth. The three central female characters are remarkably strong, each with their unique strengths and virtues. They intuitively follow their moral compasses, demonstrating resilience and wisdom as they navigate a series of challenging dilemmas. Despite being presented with less-than-ideal choices and daunting circumstances, each character is unwavering in their determination, knowing exactly what they must do to stay true to themselves and pursue their goals.

In a perilous era where being Jewish invites danger, Miryem finds herself navigating a world fraught with hostility. With a steely determination, she steps into her father’s failing money-lending business, wielding her keen intellect and resilience to transform it into a thriving enterprise. Yet, as her fortunes rise, she unwittingly draws the gaze of a formidable enemy, whose interest threatens to unsettle everything she has worked tirelessly to achieve.

Wanda is very poor, and her abusive father keeps trying to sell her into marriage for a few pigs. Miryem believes that although she may appear cold and possibly cruel by demanding that Wanda work for her family to pay off her father’s debt, she is saving Wanda's life. Wanda isn’t close to her brothers until a tragic event occurs involving one of them.

Irina, the daughter of a powerful duke, sits quietly at the ornate dining table, her father engrossed in discussions about which suitor would best serve his political ambitions, completely overlooking her. Amid the laughter and clinking glasses, she feels like a ghost, invisible and unheard. Yet beneath her calm exterior lies a sharp mind and a fierce determination. Irina knows she must use her wits and negotiation skills to escape a future that others have planned for her and her loyal maid.

Our heroines face a formidable array of challenges as they navigate a world rife with antisemitism, classism, and the oppressive societal norms imposed on women. They must also use their wit and cunning to outmaneuver the Staryk—sinister, frost-wielding beings reminiscent of a winter spirit, who siphon both precious gold and the warmth that sustains their world. Additionally, a fearsome fire demon lurks in the shadows, adding to the peril they must confront. In this intricate tapestry of conflict, appearances can be deceptive, and not everything and everyone is what they seem.

Ultimately, this enchanting tale is a heartfelt exploration of family—both by blood and the bonds we choose—loyalty and the unwavering spirit of never giving up. I was captivated by the way magic subtly weaves through the narrative, infusing even the act of prayer with a sense of wonder and possibility. This story resonates deeply with audiences of all ages, making it an ideal choice for preteens, teens, and adults who appreciate the power of hope and connection in our lives.

“Never in England were there so many gentlemen and so little gentleness.”

 In 1549, after the young King Edward inherited his father Henry VIII's throne, there was an uprising against Edward's guardian, the Lord Protector Somerset. The rebellion was led by two brothers from Norfolk named Kett, and the story focuses on the city of Norwich, which was the second-largest city in England at that time.

In all of Sansom's Tudor novels, the story revolves around the hunchback lawyer, Matthew Shardlake, and his sidekick, Jack Barak. They are sent by Edward's older step-sister, Lady Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth I), to investigate a gruesome murder near Norwich at the time of Kett's Rebellion.

Shardlake's character continues to evolve and the plot is truly excellent. It's a gripping story filled with outstanding historical insights and detail.
