“Vincent wrote once in a letter that a man who commits suicide turns his friends into murderers.”
"Leaving Van Gogh" unfolds as a profoundly tragic narrative from its opening lines. The knowledge of Vincent Van Gogh's heartbreaking fate imbues each word and every vivid description of his artworks with a haunting sense of sorrow. The story is narrated through the eyes of a doctor who briefly encounters Vincent, and he wrestles with the feeling of helplessness as he observes the artist’s painful journey. This perspective lends the tale a beautifully poignant quality.
A narrative centered on an artist who is passionate about capturing the vibrant hues of the world would undoubtedly fall short without rich descriptions of his masterpieces. Carol Wallace excels in painting a picture with her words, deftly illustrating not just the atmospheric settings of the novel—a quaint village nestled in the French countryside, the stark but serene confines of an asylum, and the bustling, art-filled streets of Paris—but also the brilliance of Van Gogh’s creations. Her prose allows readers to envision the swirling skies of "Starry Night" or the radiant sunflowers that seem to burst off the canvas.
Beyond the stunning visual imagery, two elements stand out as the most gripping in the book: the doctor's profound anguish and overwhelming guilt surrounding the tragic loss of his wife, and Vincent's heart-wrenching descriptions of his mental illness. Both men are trapped in their respective struggles, burdened by aspects of themselves that bring immense suffering. These internal conflicts shape their identities, painting them with a complexity that resonates deeply with readers. The themes of despair and emotional turmoil are so intricately woven into the narrative that they linger in the mind, making it difficult to shake off their weight once the book is closed.
Overall, "Leaving Van Gogh" is a brilliant and evocative story, rich in emotional depth and vibrant color, brought to life with meticulous care. It is a profound literary experience that I know will remain etched in my memory for a long time to come.
