This fictional work is crafted as the autobiography of Justinian II, the enigmatic and controversial Emperor of the Romans who reigned from 685 to 695 and again from 705 to 711. Turtledove provides no leniency to Justinian, who epitomizes the concept of the "anti-hero." Portrayed as spiteful, arrogant, and profoundly self-centered, his only noteworthy quality seems to be his relentless determination to rise to power. Despite the severe mutilation of his nose—an injury that traditionally served as a significant barrier to anyone aspiring to the imperial throne—and his subsequent exile, Justinian's fierce ambition propels him to return and reclaim his rightful place as emperor. This extraordinary achievement serves as a captivating focal point, ensuring that even those well-versed in Justinian's historical outcomes remain engrossed in the unfolding narrative.

To counterbalance Justinian's unsympathetic persona, Turtledove introduces the charming and relatable character of Myakes, who has served as Justinian's personal bodyguard since their boyhood days. The narrative unfolds as a manuscript, read aloud to Myakes, who is now an elderly man living in a monastery following the tragedy of his blindness. This fellow monk's reading of the manuscript allows for a dynamic interplay, with Myakes's interruptions and commentary interspersed throughout the text. His observations infuse humor and emotional depth into an otherwise cynical and dark narrative, serving as a necessary counterpoint to Justinian's inflated self-importance.

Despite Justinian's narcissistic tendencies that overshadow the numerous popes, patriarchs, generals, and other significant figures he encounters, Myakes's interjections bring these characters to life. They add texture and depth, illustrating their motivations and contributions while softening the harsh self-aggrandizement that defines Justinian's recounting of events.

While readers may struggle to identify with this controversial emperor, they will undoubtedly be intrigued by his elaborate schemes for revenge and the dark edges of his psyche. The fate that ultimately befalls Justinian remains a tantalizing mystery, inviting readers to embark on this richly woven journey through the trials and tribulations of his life—from the innocence of childhood to the bitterness of his end. Each detail is meticulously crafted, ensuring that the story remains enthralling and compelling.

The Steel Beneath the Silk by Patricia Bracewell

Emma of Normandy, an often-overlooked figure in 11th-century English history, shines brightly in Patricia Bracewell's engaging trilogy. Bracewell's meticulous research and evocative writing breathe life into Emma's story across three compelling novels. The Steel Beneath the Silk, the final installment, follows the earlier works Shadow on the Crown and The Price of Blood. Notably, Bracewell provides just enough context from the previous two books, allowing readers to dive into this third narrative without feeling lost. That said, the entire trilogy is a captivating journey, and Emma's life is richly deserving of exploration through all three volumes.

As The Steel Beneath the Silk begins, we find Emma entrenched in her marriage to King Æthelred, who, due to his reputation as Æthelred the Unready, is depicted as a flawed and ineffective ruler. Their ten-year union is marked by increasing instability, with the threat of Viking invasions looming ever closer. These marauders have escalated their assaults from mere raiding to full-scale attempts at conquest, adding urgency and peril to Emma and Æthelred's lives. Meanwhile, their sons step up to defend England, wrestling with the challenges posed by their father’s lack of decisive leadership.

Bracewell’s ability to evoke the atmosphere of the 11th century is unparalleled; she immerses readers in the sights, sounds, and tensions of the era. In a gripping opening scene, she introduces Thorkell, a formidable Viking Dane whose presence is vividly portrayed through rich, descriptive details that showcase his strength, status, and the ominous persona that he carries. The intricate politics weaved throughout this narrative are equally enthralling, filled with betrayals and schemes that keep the reader on edge. The intrigue within the English court and the Viking camps is palpable, with characters constantly navigating a landscape of deception and ambition.

Despite Æthelred's inclination to confine Emma to a passive role within the palace, she continually rises above the limitations set upon her. Demonstrating remarkable intelligence and strategic skill, Emma becomes a key player in her family's and her country's struggle for survival, all while remaining true to the historically accurate confines of her character’s time and situation.

Bracewell encountered a significant challenge in crafting this final book, given the historical record of Emma's life, which is marked by notable gaps and uncertainties. Without revealing any spoilers, there are pivotal moments in her story that could have hindered character development. However, Bracewell masterfully fills these gaps with her imaginative prowess, crafting a character arc for Emma that feels both authentic and compelling. Furthermore, she successfully navigates the complex portrayal of Cnut, one of the primary antagonists, gradually deepening the readers' understanding of his motivations and the multifaceted nature of his character. The trilogy culminates in a riveting conclusion that builds upon these developments, leaving a lasting impact on the reader.

I wholeheartedly recommend Bracewell's trilogy to anyone who has a passion for historical fiction steeped in royal intrigue, enriched with emotional depth and a nuanced romantic thread, all captured in the vibrant tapestry of a world long past.

Another outstanding installment in this captivating series elevates the stakes even higher as the narrative unfolds.

In the third and final book of the Raven's Shadow series, we find Lyrna, once the Princess of the Unified Realm and now a battle-hardened survivor, having endured the harrowing loss of her brother and family during a devastating fiery attack by the Volarians. After the tumultuous Battle of Alltor, where her armies united with the formidable skills of Vaelin al Sorna and the strategic brilliance of Lady Reva, Lyrna emerges as a newly healed Queen. This hard-fought battle saw them successfully repel a massive Volarian army laying siege to the city located in the southwestern part of her realm. However, the victory comes at a cost; she has lost her capital city in the northeast to the tyrannical Volarians.

Determined to reclaim her throne, Lyrna consolidates her once-scattered forces. Her coalition includes Vaelin and Reva's armies, along with loyal allies such as the remaining Realm Guard and valiant knights, secretive tribes who inhabit the mist-laden isle and the icy reaches of the North, courageous members of the newly revealed Seventh Order of the Faith, imbued with ancient magical powers, freed slaves yearning for a better life, and even a band of Meldenean pirates eager to aid their cause across the treacherous southwestern sea. Together, they strategize to retake the capital before shifting their focus to the Volarians and confronting them on their own ground across the churning waters to the east.

The Volarian Empire, characterized by its brutality, bloodshed, and enslavement, is now under the tyrannical rule of a body possessed by the spirit of a deranged and malevolent woman who had previously enslaved Frentis for most of the second novel. This sinister entity seems to be further manipulated by an even darker force that has begun to reveal itself ominously to Vaelin. As Lyrna's armies split into multiple factions to initiate their assault on the sprawling Volarian territory, every main character endures harrowing tribulations while establishing unexpected alliances. They embark on a perilous journey, battling through natural landscapes fraught with danger, man-made fortifications fortified against their advance, and magical obstacles that defy comprehension, all leading towards an epic final clash. In this monumental showdown, the forces of the Realm stand to either vanquish the encroaching darkness or face utter annihilation.

This book, much like the entire series, becomes increasingly difficult to set aside. As the concluding volume in the first trilogy set within this richly imagined world, the action ignites from the very first chapter and continues unabated. The characters are intricately crafted, each endowed with their own compelling emotional arcs. A recurring theme of redemption permeates the narrative, allowing even the most flawed characters the chance to transform into figures worthy of remembrance. With an enthralling plot that weaves together intricate storylines, a plethora of action, and characters that are both deep and richly layered, the conclusion delivers an experience that is truly gratifying.
